My Top Ten Fictional Couples

My Top Ten Fictional Couples

Even though it’s over a week after Valentine’s Day, I still have love and relationships on my mind, so I’ve decided to make a list of some of my favorite fictional couples. Some are extremely well-known while others are more obscure, but they all bring a smile to my face every time I read or watch them.

1. Lois Lane and Clark Kent

This is probably one of the most famous couples in all of fiction, and I think they are perfect for each other. Lois’s sass provides such good balance to Clark’s straightforward, good nature. I especially enjoy how they are portrayed in the TV shows, Smallville and Lois and Clark.

2. Han Solo and Leia Organa

As many times as I’ve seen the original Star Wars trilogy, I still enjoy Han and Leia’s playful banter every time I watch it. I always imagined the two of them living happily ever after, and in the Expanded Universe books, that’s exactly what happens. That’s one of many reasons I like that timeline much better than the Disney one. To read my post about that, click here.

3. Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade

While I’m on the subject of Star Wars romances, another of my favorite couples only exists in the Expanded Universe. Mara Jade’s character was first introduced in the original Thrawn Trilogy, and for me, the Star Wars universe is not complete without her. In the books, she and Luke eventually fall in love and get married, which is part of the reason Luke decides to allow Jedi to marry and have families. Luke and Mara are great together.

4. Michael Scofield and Sara Tancredi

Are there any other Prison Break fans that loved watching Michael and Sara’s romance? Seeing the two of them fall in love against all odds was one of my favorite parts of the show. I was so devastated when they killed Michael at the end of the series that I wrote an alternate ending where he and Sara got their happy ending. Apparently, a lot of people felt the same way because Fox released a short season in 2017 that did the same thing, although I must admit I still like my alternate ending better.

5. Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase

There are so many things to like about Percy Jackson and the Olympians. While the humor and action are great, I also really enjoy the friendship and eventual romance between Percy and Annabeth. The two of them are both so strong and independent that at first it seems like they won’t work together. Over time, though, they learn how to lean on each other and become even stronger.

6. The 11th Doctor and River Song

Of all the romantic relationships in Doctor Who, my favorite is the complicated, flirtatious one between Eleven and River. The two of them get up to such crazy shenanigans, and at some point, the Doctor even tells River his name. I have a headcanon (a fan theory that is not a fact) that the T.A.R.D.I.S. found a way to save the Eleventh Doctor’s personality and download it to the library, so River and her Doctor could be together forever.

7. Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley

While the Harry Potter movies are good overall, they did a terrible job of portraying Harry and Ginny’s relationship. (For a list of some other things they messed up, click here.) In the books, Ginny is a vibrant character and a perfect match for Harry. Each time I read the series, I enjoy watching Harry figure out he likes her, try to fight his feelings out of respect for Ron, and succumb to them in the end. It is one of the best parts of the sixth book.

8. Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe

For over a century, readers have read and loved the story of Anne of Green Gables. I think anyone who has read or watched the story can’t help but enjoy the romance between Anne and Gilbert. At first, Anne can’t stand Gilbert, but the two eventually become friends. It takes a while for Anne to realize that he is the man of her dreams, but she eventually does. The two of them have a happy life together, and in the books, have many children. (For a list of more characters that are only in the books, click here.)

9. Naruto Uzamaki and Hinata Hyuga

It drives me crazy when the protagonist of a story likes the wrong person, and that is exactly what happens throughout much of Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden. Naruto has a crush on Sakura for most of the series, and while I like her character well enough, I always knew she would only ever love Sasuke. Hinata, on the other hand, has always loved Naruto, and though it takes a lot, he eventually realizes this and falls for her, too. I have rarely been so happy to see two characters end up together. (To learn more about Naruto or other similar anime, click here.)

10. Ani and Geric

If you have never read Shannon Hale’s The Goose Girl, you are missing out. It is my favorite fairy tale retelling (which is saying something), and I enjoy reading it again and again. The main character, Princess Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee of Kildenree, prefers to be called Ani. Over the course of the story, Ani overcomes numerous obstacles and falls in love with Prince Geric of Bayern. Their romance is not the main plot of the book, but it is a wonderful subplot that adds a lot to an already amazing story.

So, those are ten of my favorite fictional couples. Which couples would make it onto your list? Let me know in the comments. If you enjoyed this post, please subscribe to see more like it.
