Meet the Kitties!

Meet the Kitties!

If you’ve visited my “About Me” page, you’ve learned a little about me, but all you know about my cats are their names. So, I’d like to introduce you to my three cats in the order we got them.

This is Jake. My husband and I adopted him from the local animal shelter in September 2016. He’s the first cat I’ve ever had. My husband had cats when he was growing up, but my family only ever had dogs. When we started talking about getting a pet, I was nervous about the idea of getting a cat, but since we were on a budget and didn’t have a fenced-in yard, we decided a cat was our best option. Jake was about four months old when we got him, which means he’s almost two years old now.

Since the day we got him, Jake has taught me so much about just how sweet cats can be. He enjoys looking out the window, being held, and riding on my husband’s shoulder. The first time we took a trip, though, we discovered that Jake doesn’t enjoy staying by himself, even if the neighbor stops by to check on him. Because of that, we decided Jake needed a friend, which brings me to our next cat.

This is Luke. According to his foster mom, he was a stray at one time. When he was caught and taken to the animal shelter, he was so skittish they thought he was unadoptable. Fortunately, his foster mom had a different opinion. Luke had been with her for several months before she brought him to PetSmart, along with some of her other foster cats, to try to find a forever home. That’s where we first saw him and decided to make him ours.

Luke was around a year old when we adopted him in June 2017. Now, he is a sweet kitty who constantly comes over and asks to be pet. He frequently rolls over so that we can rub his belly and meets us at the door every day when we come in from work. When we first got him, though, he was very scared and skittish. We think he’d had some bad experiences with humans while he was a stray.

After two months, Luke hadn’t adjusted to living with us, so we contacted his foster mom and asked her to take him back so that she could find him a home where he’d be more comfortable. She agreed and planned to come get him the next day. That meant we needed to get another cat, so that Jake wouldn’t be alone. We went to the animal shelter and picked out a new kitten, but Luke got along so well with her that we decided to wait another month to see if he would settle in at our house. And we’re so grateful we did.

This is Taiyo. He’s not the kitten we got from the animal shelter when we were planning to give Luke back to his foster mom. That kitten was a girl that we named Esmerelda. She was precious, but unfortunately, she died less than a month after we got her. I was heartbroken after Esmerelda died and didn’t want to get another kitten any time soon. By that time, Luke had grown more accustomed to living with us, so we didn’t need another cat. Or so I thought.

An adorable orange and white kitten turned up at our neighbor’s house around that time. Since he needed a home, we ended up taking him in. That was in September 2017. At the time, I thought we might try to find him another home, but after a while I got very attached and couldn’t bear to give him away. We named that kitten Taiyo, the Japanese word for sun, because of his coloring. Taiyo is my lap kitty. He loves to curl up in my lap and sleep for hours. He also stands on his hind legs and thrusts his head into my palm when I reach to pet him.

All three of my cats cuddling on a blanket. I lightened the picture, but it’s still kind of hard to see Jake.

So, now you’ve met the boys. I plan to include a lot of fun cat stories, pictures, and videos in my blog, so hopefully, you’ll get to learn a lot more about them in the days to come.
